The Coir Board has signed an MoU with the Indian Institute of Engineering-Madras to build a Centre of Excellence for the application of coir solely or in mixture with other pure fibres.
It was at the instance of Union Minister of MSME Nitin Gadkari, the IIT-Madras had previously validated the investigation reports so much were undertaken by the Coir Board and other businesses in India on Coir Geo-Textiles (CGT) and encouraged that CGT can be efficiently made use of to prevent soil erosion in slopes/embankments, river embankments, mine slope dumps stabilisation and so forth. The institute has also encouraged the use of CGT in the very low volume rural roadways as a re-enforcement content.
The centre aims at furthering the investigation get the job done in the coir sector with the help of IIT-Madras.
